More than 16,000 Businesses Shut Down in Greece in 2015

Since the economic slump of 2008, and the 2010 economic crisis that followed, the private sector in Greece has received a tremendous blow with a total of 244,712 businesses closing down.
In 2008, there were 858,685 registered businesses in Greece, according to official EC figures. At the end of 2015, only 613,973 were left, with more closing each passing day.
The closing of the 244,712 businesses also corresponds to 842,670 jobs lost from 2008 until end 2015. This has cost 30.31 billion euros in gross domestic product.
In more recent figures, in 2014 there were 630,050 businesses operating in Greece, while the number dropped to 613,793 at the end of 2015. The jobs lost in the private sector in 2015 amount to 45,000, while the GDP was reduced further.
Regarding 2016, according to the General Business Registry, from January until end of March 2016, 9,812 businesses were deleted from the registry while 5,988 new businesses were registered.
