European Commission Sees Gaps in Greece's Border Control

newego_LARGE_t_1101_54609181A European Commission report finds that there are gaps in Greece’s border controls regarding Europe’s external borders.
“There are still some gaps to be addressed and concrete actions need to be undertaken,” said EC deputy spokesperson Mina Andreeva in a press briefing in Brussels.
The measures Greece needs to take to stem migrant flows are connected to the lifting of restrictions imposed on the borders of several European Union countries.
Andreeva announced that on May 12 the Commission will present the final conclusion regarding the extension of the emergency border controls inside the EU for another six months.
The Commission spokesperson said Athens needs to take specific actions and that “this is the right time to do so in order to allow for the gradual removal of border controls until November.”
The Commission is expected to announce on Wednesday its proposal for the revision of the Dublin Treaty. Last month the EC had presented options for a more “fair” and “sustainable” system of distribution of asylum seekers among EU Member States from which derives the final proposal. “The Commission will discuss the recommendations of the review and will come to a decision,” Andreeva said.
