Greek Govt Aims to Pass Pension, Tax Bills in Parliament Before Monday

vouliolomeleiaIn a sudden move, the Greek government decided to bring the bills on social security and tax reforms for vote to parliament this weekend, ahead of Monday’s Eurogroup.
The government unexpectedly called a plenary for this weekend in order to pass the bills in parliament. Analysts say that the Greek government came to this decision after Wednesday’s discussions of the Euro Working Group and the strategy to send Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos to Monday’s meeting of Eurozone Finance Ministers with the reforms already legislated.
Government officials say that Athens will not succumb to the International Monetary Fund’s demands for legislated contingency measures. Instead, Greece proposes a cutoff mechanism that will be activated when the government veers off fiscal targets. Said mechanism will be based on Eurostat figures upon their release.
According to Greek media, party leaders have been informed that the bills will be discussed and voted in two sessions, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
