Greek Funicular Providing Transportation and Tourism for 120 Years

funicular Kalavrita-DiakoptoThe Greek towns of Diakofto and Kalavrita are connected by a historical funicular. The route is seeped with culture and mythology as it begins in Diakofto, traverses the Vouraikos Gorge, passes through the village of Zachlorou and ends in Kalavrita. The duration of the trip is about 1 hour.
2016 marks its 120 years of operation. This May, local institutions came together to create a new proposal that captures the funicular’s value. They noted that the funicular is not just a means of transportation, but a tourist attraction and an element of culture. It is also worth noting that the Chelmos-Vouraikos national park has been listed by UNESCO as a geo park.
A new program has been developed in order to promote the funicular, offering travel with decreased ticket fees for students and school teams, passage through the unique Vouraikos Gorge, events of sampling and local products, meetings, musical events and educational activities.
