Greek FinMin Euclid Tsakalotos: Upbeat and Relieved After Eurogroup

Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos kicked off his press conference following the May 9 extraordinary Eurogroup meeting on Greece with optimism. “This was a very good eurogroup for Greece, and I think a very good eurogroup for Europe.”
Speaking on behalf of the left-led SYRIZA government, Tsakalotos expressed his relief that the country’s contingency measures are being used as the basis for discussions. Further relief was expressed concerning the start of debt talks using a ‘three-layer’ time zoning approach to tackle Greek debt in the short, medium and long-term.
The contingency measures should Greece miss targets and veer off course would be implemented “across the board” with extra austerity if necessary, however the government would then subsequently implement different measures.
Concluding, Tsakalotos said that he expects the International Monetary Fund to come on board and support the deal, bearing in mind that debt relief was discussed. Furthermore, he stated confidence that Greece would achieve its targets, indicating the belief that contingency measures would not be needed.
