Greek Sports Dep Min Postpones Cup Final, Again

stavros-kontonisThe decision by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) to hold the postponed Greek Cup final on May 15 was rejected by Deputy Minister of Sports Stavros Kontonis.
According to Kontonis, EPO doesn’t have the right to override his original decision to postpone the final. Originally, the Olympiacos-AEK game was to be played on May 8, but it was postponed after police stated they cannot police the match because a mass protest rally outside the Greek Parliament was scheduled on that day.
The deputy’s decision was based on the fact that even though EPO agreed on international referee Tasos Sidiropoulos, they appointed different assistant referees than the team of assistant referees he is using on international games.
Kontonis has considered the EPO move to appoint a different assistant referee team as a shrewd move that is going against his will.
EPO, on the other hand, considers that the deputy’s decision to intervene goes against the FIFA and UEFA regulation that football federations should be self governed.
