From Ancient Mines to Healing Stones: The Evolution of the Stone Market in Greece

lavrio mine ruinsThe importance of geology in Greece dates back to the Classical Era when mines filled with silver, gold, iron and other natural ores contributed to the formation of the ancient Greek civilization. In fact, many of the monuments of Athens (Parthenon, great walls of Athens, statues and majority of the temples) were built with money that was revenue from mines. In particular, the Lavrio silver mine was a source of wealth and power to ancient Athens and is interconnected with the rise and fall of the Athenian Empire, from 5th – 4th BC. Located in the Sounio National Park in a general area called Agrileza (near the village of Agios Konstadinos), the ruins of the mines and workshops were under excavation until as recently as 2009.

Nowadays when one wants to discover stone artifacts, minerals, fossils and gems a trip to a mine is no longer necessary. Stone Stories, located in Athens, is one of the oldest in the stone markets in Greece and offers a variety of products. The store was founded by geologist, Dr. Nicholas Albandakis, who started conducting geological studies in 1969. His passion led him to discover the rare green quartz (prase) on Serifos Island in 1980, which ultimately led to worldwide recognition in his field.
Dr. Albandakis capitalized on his momentum from this event and expanded his company that same decade as he entered the market of minerals, fossils, ready-made jewelry, jewelry stones and even set up a workshop for cutting stones. Also at Stone Stories, aspiring geologists and professionals alike can find geologist tools such as hammers or drilling equipment, books and CDs.

Also it may be said that Stone Stories was at the helm of bringing healing stones and gems to Greece. In the 1990’s, long before the popularity boom of alternative healing methods here in Greece, Dr. Albandakis brought healing stones into his inventory. In the past few years, Stone Stories has further expanded their reach into wellness and alternative healing as Dimitri and Miranda Albandakis follow in the steps of their father, adding to the store musical instruments from stone, essential oils, aura sprays, energy jewelry, massage crystals and hot stones. Their website explains, “The healing art of crystals is known and practiced since ancient years! The natural healing power combined with the correct use can heal and bring balance to our soul, body and mind!”
