Efthymia Stergiou — a senior citizen, aged 77 — sat for the nationwide Panhellenic Exams along with over 100,000 students around Greece. Her decision to hit the books and sit for the university entrance exams was a childhood dream that she was unable to fulfill due to the conditions in place when she was younger. The woman from the northern Aegean island of Samothraki had wanted to become a teacher when she was younger.
She decided to complete her senior high school education following the encouragement of her son. Talking to Facebook, Savvas Stergiou, the woman’s son wished his mother good luck on her exams in the theoretical strand and expressed his pride in his mother who enrolled at the Alexandroupolis Night School in northeastern Greece.
“I have no stress. I’m waiting for the moment when I sit at that desk and hold my pen to write the first line on the exam sheet,” said the septuaganarian on Monday morning when her son asked her how she felt.
