Daily Mail: Caribbean Migrants Enter EU Through Greece

CARRIBEAN
British newspaper Daily Mail cast the spotlight on the epic route that hundreds of migrants from the Caribbean are taking to enter the European Union through Greece. The newspaper’s reportage, titled “Now Hundreds of Migrants From the Caribbean Fly 6,000 Miles to Turkey in bid to Enter Europe While Posing As Being From Somalia,” estimates that almost 400 migrants came to Greece from the Caribbean, the majority from the Dominican Republic last year, and another 150 in the first three months of 2016.
The newspaper quotes EU border guard Anna Smigielska who interviewed migrants arriving on the Greek island of Lesvos. She said that the Caribbean migrants were drawn by cheap flights and the fact that they don’t need visas for Turkey.
A spokesman for EU border agency Frontex said, though the route is extreme, it sets a precedent for other economic migrants to follow.
