Former Greek Red Cross and Henry Dunant Hospital Director Arrested for Bribery

marFormer director of the Greek Red Cross and affiliated Henry Dunant Hospital and his wife were arrested on Monday on a warrant issued by a corruption prosecutor.
Andreas Martinis, 75, and his wife Georgia are accused of bribery. Specifically, Martinis is accused of receiving 3.2 million German marks from a German company for purchasing hospital equipment and supplies from the particular firm in 1998, when he was the director of the Henry Dunant Hospital. The total purchase was for 12 billion drachmas, approximately 36 million euros.
The two defendants will appear in front of prosecutor on corruption Nikos Tsironis. It should be noted that the charges will be for money laundering because the bribery charges do not apply since 18 years have elapsed since the crime.
The two defendants deny the money laundering charges, claiming that the money in their accounts come from family assets and not from illegal activities.
Corruption prosecutor Eleni Raikou began investigating Martinis over a year ago. During the investigation it was found that the German company Hospitalia International overcharged the hospital for the supplies and Martinis had persuaded the hospital board of directors to accept the deal.
After the deal was signed, the supplier deposited 3.2 million German in a Swiss bank account that belonged to Martinis. From 2001 and on, the money started moving to different accounts. Later, 1.1 million marks belonging to Martinis ended in an offshore company in Liberia.
