Former Red Cross President Andreas Martinis, also chief of Athens’ Henry Dunant Hospital, was remanded in custody on Friday following charges of bribe-taking worth 3.2 million marks from a German company.
His testimony concerning his choice of Hospitalia International for medical supplies and hotel equipment in 1998 ran for more than 3.5 hours.
His wife, Georgia, was released on restriction after posting bail at 600,000 euros.
The couple states that the bribe money deposited by the German company was received by a lawyer involved in the contract and concerned his legal fee. They state that the same lawyer, coincidentally the administrator of their estate had owed the couple money and paid them off for money owed rather than bribe pay out.
