Greek-Russian Religious Tourism Explores Divine Cooperation

meteora- national geographicAn exploration of the divine was spotlighted at the Greek-Russian Conference on Pilgrimage and Religious Tourism that took place at the Grand Resort Lagonissi, East Attica, on Friday. Religious tourism to Greece is a priority, said Greek Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura during her address.
The event was geared towards enhancing tourism cooperation between Greece and Russia that are bound by their faith. Kountoura said that her ministry was in close contact with the church and regional authorities to offer a number of tours of interest to the faithful.
Kountoura said that apart from steady favorite tourist hotspots there were many other interesting new destinations worth promoting specifically for those who come to Greece for prayer and penance.
There are many forms that religious tourism can take, including a proposal for religious cruises.
Pilgrimage routes in both countries were presented and discussions were held to help develop cooperation between the tourism sectors of both countries.
The event, held within the framework of the Greece-Russia Cross-year events included a number of attendees such as heads of pilgrim centers and church representatives from both Greece and Russia. There were addresses by Archimandrite Spyridon Katramados and the director of the Department of Tourism and Regional Policy, Ministry of Culture of Russia, Olga Yarilova.
