Self-styled Anarchists Protest Social Security Reforms at Labor Ministry Branch

protests anarchists This morning the entrance to a branch of the Labor Ministry in Athens city center was blocked by a group of self-styled anarchists. In protest of the latest social security reforms, they have draped a banner on the front of the building where certain Labor Ministry services are housed.

According to some estimates, overĀ 1.5 million Greek retirees and beneficiaries will be affected by the recent reforms in Greece’s social security system, as they aim toĀ reduce the amount of state money designatedĀ to the system. More protests are expected as GreeksĀ are set toĀ have increases of contributions to social security tax by employed individuals andĀ their employers while receiving reductions in monthly pension payments above 1,300 euros a month and theĀ gradual elimination of bonuses for 380,000 lower-income pensioners.

It is reported that police have dispatched to the location of the government building inĀ response to a postsĀ on an anti-establishment’s website, ā€œAnarchist Assembly on Social and Class Emancipation,ā€Ā which claims to represent the group assembled. They have called for protesters to assemble in front of the building later in the day. Police are on stand-by to prevent incidents of violence andĀ vandalism. According to some accounts there have been up to a dozen protesters entering the building.
