Greece Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras received Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on Wednesday in the Greek capital.
“I welcome you at a crucial and interesting period for our region, for Europe, for Greece and Cyprus, especially lately that they are a pillar of stability in a widely troubled region,” Tsipras said in a brief dialogue with Anastasiades at Maximos Mansion.
“Our close cooperation has turned Greece and Cyprus into an essential pillar of economic cooperation, peace and stability. I think that this role gives us an advantage to see better conditions in the effort to solve the Cyprus problem always according to the rules of the international law,” said the Greek leader.
Tsipras did note, however, that “this is a road with ups and downs.”
The Greek PM closed his statement by stating: “I am pleased that we are able to follow a policy with cautiousness as well as determination. I think that we will succeed to focus on those critical goals, because a solution must, above all, be a fair solution.”
Anastasiades praised Greece as the country closed a long chapter of economic uncertainty and difficulties and underlined that if the government continues with the same determination, then the days of hope are ahead.
The Cyprus President was referring to Tuesday’s eurozone announcement which hailed a “breakthrough” with Greece and the IMF regarding a debt deal.
Anastasiades added that during his meeting with Tsipras he will have the opportunity to discuss the role Greece and Cyprus can play as partners in the region.
Both men are also expected to discuss Tsipras’ meeting with Turkey President Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul which came to a conclusion on Tuesday.
Anastasiades met with Greece President Prokopis Pavlopoulos earlier on Wednesday and he is also expected to meet with main opposition party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
