Peloponnese Region Voted Number One Place to Visit Summer 2016 by Lonely Planet

waterfront_limeni-village_greece-the-peloponnese_In its annual publishing of the best places to visit in Europe, Lonely Planet has placed the Peloponnese region of Greece in the top spot. The travel guide describes the region as “an affordable enclave of magnificent ancient sites like Olympia, Mycenae and Mystra.”
This wide, leaf-shaped peninsula was originally called Morea, meaning mulberry leaf. The Peloponnese region connects to the mainland by the Rio-Antirrio bridge and is frequently overlooked by typical tours of Greece and the region.
The region is laced with classical Greek temples, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortresses and Mycenaean palaces. The lands of Peloponnese are seeped in rich mythological and ancient history. Ancient ruins transport you back to times of the Gods as you visit the ruins of Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were hosted in honor of Zeus. Lonely Planet has a complete list of suggestions of things to do in Peloponnese at: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/greece/the-peloponnese/things-to-do
Also the recently opened trails at Menalon is a way that many hikers and nature lovers can explore the region. This long mountain trail is located in Arcadia, in the center of Peloponnese, and traverses the Lousios River gorge, the western slopes of Menalo Mountain, the valley of Mylaon River and the Northeast Gortynian Mountains. The prizewinning program “Greek Paths of Culture” created by the Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage takes hikers through paths of beautiful nature, cultural significance and historical importance.
