German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble expressed optimism on Monday regarding Greece’s economic future following last week’s deal with creditors to unlock its next tranche disbursement.
Addressing a conference on the sustainability of Germany’s fiscal condition, Schaeuble said that while the Eurozone was not implementing the best monetary policy for Germany, it was necessary to recognize that the European Central Bank (ECB) had to pursue a currency union for all 19 member states.
He said that the ECB and other institutions needed to be open to being debated publicly such as the criticism that the central bank has recently received in Germany for its very low-interest rates. Schaeuble underlined that the crisis may have brought difficult policy decisions for Greece, but this was the only way to go in order to achieve budget stability.
