Greek, Egyptian Coast Guards Rescue 340 Migrants Off Crete, 9 Dead

immigra1At least nine dead and 340 rescued migrants is the latest count of a joint rescue operation between the Greek and Egyptian coast guards after a boat sank 70 nautical miles south of Crete, with initial reports talking about 600 passengers.
Five rescue boats have been deployed so far and a large scale operation is underway. According to Hellenic Coast Guard official Nikos Lagadianos the boat was 25 meters long and sank 70 miles south of the Kaloi Limenes port of Crete and within Egypt’s FIR.
Greece’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center has mobilized in aid of the Egyptian authorities. Vessels of the Greek coast guard have been deployed and Hellenic Air Force super puma helicopters rushed to the rescue site. The search continues.
