Distress Signal from Vessel in South Mediterranean, Greek Coast Guard Launches Rescue Operation

According to the Greek Shipping Ministry, theĀ Greek Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation for a vessel with about 200 migrants on board which sent a distress signal off the island of Crete.
They reported that the Greek Coast Patrol along with other vessels in the nearby vicinity are rushing to the area where the vessel is believed to be located in the southern Mediterranean Sea, in Libya‘s waters.
According to ministry sources, Greek officials were made aware of the situation from an SOS call by a Greek tanker that was sailing near by the distressed vessel.
