The Refugee Crisis Management Coordination Body’s data shows that there are 57,042 refugees in Greece at the moment. Of these, 5,501 refugees are staying at UNHCR-created settlements, whereas 5,759 are staying at non-organized facilities. Another 1,500 people are scattered.
The East Aegean islands are currently hosting 8,449 refugees of which 56 were recent arrivals who made their way to the country in the last 24 hours.
Attica, where the Athens capital is located, is temporary refuge for 9,935 people, central Greece has 2,123 people, south of Greece are another 248 people and 23,527 refugees are scattered over 29 clusters in northern Greece.
World Refugee Day on June 20
These figures were released ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20. Volunteers and local authorities on the isle of Lesvos, in the Aegean, at the front line of the refugee crisis will create a series of events leading up to June 20. A “solidarity tree” on June 18 will allow visitors to write messages of hope and compassion on pieces from the plastic dinghies that carried refugees and migrants across the perilous journey from Turkey to Lesvos.
On June 16, performers from various European countries will present the play “Meeting the Odyssey” at Kara Tepe, Molyvos and Mytilene fort, combining elements of the Odyssey with modern issues relating to Europe.
