Anastasiades-Akinci Meeting on Bilateral Ties and Trade

CYPRUS
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades met with Turkish Cypriot Leader Mustafa Akinci on Friday to discuss the long-standing Cypriot dispute. Following the meeting, Anastasiades said that progress was made and the groundwork was laid for the powers of the state and signing international treaties. Speaking to the press, he said that there should be no rush on natural gas agreements following statements made by Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.
Anastasiades pointed to the IMF and World Bank reports that will outline what the actual needs are for the island. “If there is a need for aid from a loan to complete funding so the people are not weighed down with taxes and other costs, then there is potential that one of the possibilities we could use — if specifically more natural gas is found — a part, a small part, to contribute to dealing with problems that we will have to face from all the people that select to be reimbursed,” he said, making it clear however, that Cypriot national wealth would not be put up to pay off other debts. “We will ask for international help, not through an international conference of donors, but through bilateral contacts,” he said.
