Greek Authorities Investigate Ericsson Staff Over Corruption Scandal

ericssonOn Sunday the Swedish telecom giant, Ericsson, announced that Greek authorities have summoned seven unnamed former employees on suspicion of corruption.
The announcement comes just days after the company stated that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is spearheading a separate probe into allegations of corruption in its operations in China in accordance to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Now investigators are also looking into Greece’s purchase of radar technology from Ericsson Microwave Systems back in 1999 as part of a defense deal which included the delivery of an airborne radar system.
Although Ericsson formally disclosed the probe two years ago, recently seven current and former employees have been brought under investigation as a part of preliminary investigation proceedings.
“Recently, seven current and former Ericsson employees have been summoned for questioning by the Greek public prosecutor as part of a preliminary enquiry into allegations of possible corruption,” Ericsson said in a statement according to thelocal.se.
This all comes on the heels of a Greek business man who worked for Ericsson being arrested back in September in connection with paying off a Greek politician 2 million euros as a bribe to help the company acquire and secure a 540 million euro deal.
It is uncertain if any of the seven individuals under suspicion are current executives at Ericsson.
“We will not go into details about the seven…We don’t comment on individuals and specific cases,” press spokesperson Karin Hallstan told the news agency TT when questioned about the probe.
