Greece's Retail Sales Drop 1.5% in April

newego_LARGE_t_1101_54697905_type13145Greek retail sales by volume dropped 1.5 percent in April compared to the same month in 2015, according to Greece’s statistical authority, ELSTAT.
The figures released on Thursday show that the drop came after an upwardly revised 1.2 percent slide in March.
Poor retail sales on cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fuels, lubricants and household appliances, pulled total retail sales down, the data showed. At the same time there was a signficant increase in clothing and shoes sales.
Also, for the first quarter, gross domestic product appeared, showing weakness in Greek consumer spending with the economy contracting by 0.5 percent compared to the fourth quarter in 2015.
Tax hikes and capital controls, imposed at the end of June 2015 to stem mass outflow of deposits, have affected negatively the retail sector.
