Prosecutor Wants Greek Pop Star to Face the Music

HATZIGIANNIS
Popular Greek-Cypriot recording artist Michalis Hatzigiannis – one of the most successful singers of the last decade – is to stand trial over charges of failure to declare 5 million euros in his tax statements for 2010-2011. His lawyers have made an appeal requesting that he not stand trial, however public prosecutor Evsevia Kormikari called on the council of prosecutors to reject this appeal. The decision regarding whether he will stand trial is set to be reached over the coming weeks.
If the case reaches courts, Hatzigiannis will stand trial for money laundering after allegedly transferring cash from illegal activities to Cyprus.
In August 2014, the singer had once again come under scrutiny after being arrested by the local police of the upmarket suburb of Glyfada, after the singer’s accountant had made a false declaration of theft regarding Hatzigiannis’ red Ferrari while the car was for sale in a showroom since 2009 and plates from the vehicle were kept by an employee. Both the singer and the accountant were then arrested for providing false information to authorities.
