Greek Coast Guard Rescues 61 Migrants Off Kos Island

limenikoprosfyges708Hellenic Coast Guard officers rescued 61 migrants off the island of Kos on Tuesday and arrested two suspected traffickers.
A boat carrying migrants was seen sinking close to the island shore early Tuesday morning, and authorities were notified. A coast guard vessel arrived on the spot and rescued the 61 passengers on board.
Two men on board were suspected as migrant smugglers and were detained by coast guard officers. The boat was coming from Turkey.
Meanwhile, a boat carrying around 40 migrants arrived on Lesvos.
The new, consecutive arrivals imply that the Turkey-European Union agreement to stem the migrant flow to Europe has been shaken after the recent coup attempt in Turkey and the EU warning to Turkish leaders that talks on Turkey’s accession will be terminated if the country brings back the death penalty to punish the coup perpetrators.
