Greece's Council of State Approves First Mosque in Athens

B79925D5FD1275B07F19D28FAACB50C8The construction of the first official mosque in Athens has been approved, following the decision of the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court.
After decades of objections from religious and citizen groups, the way is clear for the issuance of a building permit. The environment ministry and interior ministry are next to give procedural approvals. The construction is expected to cost 1 million euros and it will be fully funded by the state.
There’s been pressure on the Greek government to proceed with the building permit of a mosque in Athens as Greece’s Muslim population increases with the arrival of refugees from Syria and other Muslim migrants.
The site of the new mosque building is in Eleonas, a very sparsely populated Athens neighborhood. It will be a low-rise construction without a minaret and a prayer hall for 350 Shia and Sunni Muslims.
