Incalculable Ecological Damage Caused by Wildfire in Northern Evia (video)

Limni_fire2As of Monday morning, the wildfire that has been blazing in northern Evia for the past three days still threatens the town of Limni (Lake), and authorities have now anchored a boat near the port incase an emergency evacuation is necessary.
Currently the situation has called to action some 140 firefighters, 58 vehicles, 74 land units, 30 soldiers, 27 water tanks and 7 bulldozers along with firefighting brigades from the greater region.
Nikos Toskas, the Alternative Minister from Civilians’ Protection will be arriving in the area on Monday and is hopeful that the firefighting efforts on behalf of so many brigades will prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby town.
Although official authorities have not yet instructed the evacuation of villages and towns in northern Evia many residents have already fled in fear of their safety and the raging fire reaching their homes.
Because of powerful winds Sunday afternoon in the region of northern Evia, the fire resurged in the forest region of the town of Limni (Lake). All land and air forces that battle fires in the greater region responded to the call of duty Sunday afternoon.
Limni_fire1The first light of day on Sunday showed enormous ecological destruction near the large village of Lake in northern Evia and “incalculable damages,” authorities said.
The wildfire had began in the region known as Farakla at noon on Saturday and within a few hours it had spread to the seaside resort of Katounia in the Limni (Lake) area.
The wildfire continues to sweep over northern Evia, burning roughly some 2,000 hectares of forest on the island, and was under control all day Sunday until the afternoon winds flared up, the fire brigade reported.
