Coast Guard Rescues 34 Migrants off Greek Island Lesvos on Monday

lesvos migrantsFollowing a week of almost no activity of migrants arriving to Lesvos, on Monday Coast Guard officers rescued 34 migrants piled onto a dinghy off the shores of the island.
Although the migrant crisis had slowed in regards to new arrivals over the past few months since the EU-Turkey migration deal went into effect in March, since the failed military coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, the flow of migrants has increased.
Migrants are transferred to the Moria migrant reception center where they will then be processed and have the opportunity to apply for asylum.
There are currently some 3,559 migrants living on the Greek island of Lesvos in refugee camps, most of whom are Syrian.
Other islands that are feeling the brunt of migrants fleeing the Middle East and Turkey for the EU are the Greek islands of Chios and Samos which have 2,598 and 1,035 migrants living in camps on the islands, respectively.
