Austrian National Suspected of Terrorism Links Arrested in Cyprus

ΑΣΤΥΝΟΜΙΑ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ ΑΥΤΟΚΙΝΗΤΟA 28-year-old Austrian national was arrested by Cypriot authorities on suspicion of having links to terrorist organization, announced the country’s Justice Minister Ionas Nikolaou. Cypriot authorities received a tip-off from Poland’s Interpol that the man was seeking to come to Cyprus after Polish authorities deported him, stated the minister to Associated Press.
The 28-year-old man, a Muslim convert, flew to the Turkish-Cypriot part of the country from Istanbul. He was arrested as he was trying to cross borders to the Greek-Cypriot part of the country, on Tuesday evening.
According to AP, the Austrian national had been on the list of individuals known to have been radicalized. Upon his arrest he informed the police that he had traveled to Cyprus to pray at a mosque where it’s said that the Prophet Mohammed’s aunt is buried.
Authorities are planning on deporting the man to Austria.
