The list of foreign scholars born to families of Greek heritage is a long one.
Let’s take a look at some of the top Greek scholars that came out of Greece, or Greek lineage, and are currently working abroad in some of the most prestigious foreign job posts.
Nicholas Christakis (Physician and Sociologist, USA)
Christakis is a Greek-American who was born in 1962 and is a physician and sociologist at Harvard University.
In 2009 he was given the honor of being listed by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of that year.
Thanasis Economou (Nuclear Scientist, USA)
Born in Graven, Greece, Nuclear Physicist Thanasis Economou has been working for NASA since the 60s, and was the youngest scientist employed by NASA at the time.
He even contributed to NASA’s mission to the Moon during the time period of 1966-1968, NASA’s Apollo program in 1961 to 1975 and played a crucial role in developing tools and various techniques that would eventually help NASA’s Pathfinder find its way to Mars, which took place between 1993-1997.
Katerina Harvati (Paleoanthropologist, Germany)
Specializing in Neanderthal evolution, modern human origins and the application of 3-D geometric morphometric methods to anthropology, Dr. Harvati is known all around the world in her field of paleoanthropology.
From Europe to Africa and Greece she has participated in much fieldwork and is currently adjunct Associate Professor of Anthropology at the City University of New York.
Vicky Pryce (Economist, UK)
You might have seen Pryce commenting on the economic crisis in Greece on CNN or other international news outlets and thought to yourself that she sure does seem well-versed on Greek society and its people. That’s because she is Greek.
Born in Greece, Pryce went to London in 1952 to study at the LSE. Now she is the new joint head of the UK’s Government Economic Service. She made history by landing this position, as it has never been held by a non-Treasury official or a woman.
Joseph Sifakis (Computer Engineer, France)
Born in Grenoble, France, Sifakis is a CNRS (Centre National De La Recherche Scientific) researcher and the founder of Verimag Laboratory.
He has made significant strides in his field as he has pioneered in his work on both theoretical and practical aspects of Concurrent Systems Specification and Verification.
