Greek Migration Minister: Refugee Flows from Turkey Manageable

MOYZALASGreece’s Deputy Migration Minister Yiannis Mouzalas stated on Friday that the migrant flows from Turkey are manageable and that Ankara still honors its agreement with the European Union on stemming refugee flows.
His statement came after Greek government concerns over Turkey’s threat to cancel the Ankara-EU agreement signed in March unless Europe grants visa-free travel to Turkish citizens. After the failed coup attempt in Turkey and the argument over the visa provision, dozens of migrants started landing on the Greek islands close to Turkey on a daily basis.
“We have a daily average of 80-100 people and that has roughly been the average since the beginning of the agreement,” Mouzalas said. On Thursday, 147 migrants landed on Greek islands.
The migration minister added that talk of large numbers of migrant arrivals from Turkey “is wrong and creates a sense of panic which we do not need.”
In an effort to decongest the five eastern Aegean islands where migrant registration centers operate (Lesvos, Kos, Chios, Samos and Leros). Mouzalas spoke about transferring migrants to the mainland, where new migrant camps are set. Four new camps to accommodate 2,000 refugees and migrants will be build on the island of Crete.
