Turkey Threatens to Flood the Aegean Sea With Refugees

cavusogluTurkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu accused the EU of “humiliating” Turkey and noted once again that the EU-Turkey agreement on migration as well as the country’s demand for visa-free travel for Turkish citizens visiting the EU should be respected. “The Turkish people are traumatized,” he said referring to the July 15 attempted coup that aimed to overthrow the country’s president.
“Rather than helping Turkey, the EU is humiliating us,” he said to the German Bild, expressing his regret over the fact that EU-Turkey talks on visa-free travel to the EU had come to a halt. According to Cavusoglu, Turkey is abiding by the EU’s conditions, however, the country is only receiving threats and insults in return.
“I ask myself, what crime have we committed? Why this hostility?” he added. Cavusoglu had already accused the EU of “encouraging” the coup plotters. “It is clear: either we apply all the agreements together, or we set them all aside,” Cavusoglu said to Bild when asked if Turkey was planning on sending hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees to Greece.
Meanwhile, German President Joachim Gauck stressed the need for his country to continue negotiations with Turkey, but added that blackmail would not be allowed. Joachim Gauck supported Angela Merkel’s refugee policy, noting that Germany is still strong and in no case should it be considered “a sinking ship.”
