Dangerous 'Legal Drugs' Sold in Convenience Stores in Greece

strifto-tsigaro-ygeia“Legal drugs,” as they are known worldwide, have appeared for sale in convenience stores in Thessaloniki, according to an Eleftheros Typos newspaper report.
The new drugs, that are very popular to youngsters, are synthetic hemp substitutes sold as air fresheners in attractive, colorful packages. They are cheap (about 10 euros a bag), trendy, easy to obtain, mainly through the internet, and they can be smoked anywhere in public because they don’t smell.
The manufacturers use substances that do not belong to the illegal substances category and sell them as potpourri. This way, the “spice” drugs – as police call them – are available legally. They also give them attractive names such as “head trip,” “boom,” “cloud 10” or “freedom fly.”
According to the report, the synthetic drugs appeared in certain convenience stores and kiosks in Thessaloniki. At the same time, they can be bought online as low as 12 euros per 10 grams.
According to a Hellenic Police official, “these synthetic drugs are usually not detectable and (the manufacturers) are a step ahead of the law. They cooperate with chemists who manufacture them in a way that is legitimate. They know the law provisions and use substances that are not illegal. When police confiscate such substances, they send them to the State General Laboratory where it is found that they are dangerous and then they are added to the list of illegal drugs. However, both of these processes take a long time. Also, when a substance used is included in the list of illegal substances, the manufacturers modify the synthetic drugs using other ingredients that are not branded illegal yet.”
All packages of the “aromatic” air fresheners bear the inscription “This substance is dangerous if smoked.” They are produced mainly in Central Europe and China. The chemicals used as a raw material are dried herbs, which are sprayed with dangerous synthetic substances. “Legal drugs” killed 300 youngsters in 2014 in Sweden, where they are very popular. The second country with the largest use is Russia.
