Albanian Officials Demand Probe into Death of Albanian Man in Custody of Greek Police

PolicEA 29-year-old convicted robber allegedly jumped to his death when he leapt out of the window at an Athens police station when he was told he could face additional charges for other crimes, the Greek authorities have reported.
Pellumb Marnikolaj, an Albanian national was already convicted on charges of robbery in Athens and sentenced to serve an 8-year prison term.
There has been conflicting media reports in Albania from that of what Greek authorities have claimed happened to Marnikolaj. The Albanian media has reported that Greek police are covering up the “torture and murder” of Marnikolaj and called on Albanian government officials to seek justice.
This has led to Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Bujar Nishani putting pressure on Greece to further investigate the circumstances under which Marnikolaj was held and processed by the Greek police.
There are no reports or evidence in the autopsy supporting the claims of misconduct or abuse on the part of the Greek police, according to the Greek lawyer who was hired by Pellumb Marnikolaj’s brother.
