German Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling for German citizens of Turkish descent to continue to show reinforced dedication to Germany in an interview with German daily Deutsche Welle. Asked about Greece’s handling of the refugee crisis, Merkel stressed the need for the EU-Turkey agreement to be adhered to. She stressed that the development of a European system of political asylum has not developed at the level she would have hoped.
Merkel pointed out that the fact that only 3,000 refugees have been relocated from Greece to the EU shows that member states are not acting in the way one would expect. She said that the closure of the borders by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and lag in a decision with Ankara resulted in 45,000 refugees and migrants in Greece.
Bearing in mind the population levels in Greece, the analogous number of refugees that Germany would need to receive would be 360,000 people according to Merkel.
