Greek Seismologist Says it's 'too early' to Say if 6.2 earthquake in Italy was the 'main' Earthquake

italy earthquake Aug 24 2016The earthquake in Italy was so disastrous because there were many old medieval buildings, churches and monuments, the head of the Anti-seismic Planning and Protection Organization, Efthymios Lekkas, and Athens Geodynamic Institute seismologist, Gerassimos Chouliaras said on Wednesday in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
Chouliaras did not rule out the possibility of another big earthquake.
“It is too early to say if this was the main earthquake. In the past Italy has recorded such strong pre-earthquakes,” he noted.
Both of them pointed out that the earthquake was quite superficial, it had a focal depth of only 10 km; the reason for the disastrous impact.
Lekkas said that Italy has not yet asked for help from Greece, but they are preparing themselves to send technical assistance.
