A major fire broke out on Chios early in the morning on Friday destroying a forested area and injuring six people.
The blaze continues between the villages Sidirounta, Katavasi and Managros.
Speaking to Skai television, deputy governor of the region Stamatis Karmantzis said the fire passed through the village of Sidirounta and left six people wounded.
Four of them were taken to the hospital suffering light burns and received medical treatment. Two women remained in the hospital with one of them, a 64-year-old, suffering 70 percent burns. The woman will be transferred by helicopter to Athens.
According to Politischios.gr, the fire broke out at 3:30 am and soon the first flames appeared in Sidirounta. By 4:30 am the village was evacuated by police as some of the houses were damaged by the flames.
Panic ensued as many cars were trapped in the village square, while helpless elderly people were trying to board municipality vehicles to flee.
The strong winds and the lack of water allowed the fire to enter the village and damage the outsides of houses.
Twenty-eight firefighters, 15 fire engines, five private water trucks, several other vehicles and dozens of volunteers are taking part in the effort to contain the blaze. Meanwhile, two Kamov firefighting helicopters are employed in the Sidirounta and Metochi area.
