Greek Education Ministry Plans New Changes for University Entry Exams

5 (2)The two-year International Baccalaureate is the Ministry of Education proposal, upon which the changes in the structure of secondary education and university entry examinations will be based.
The changes are deemed necessary after last week’s results for the yearly university and technical college entry exams where the grades were much lower than expected.
The model of the two-year International Baccalaureate means reorganization of secondary education in four Gymnasium years and two Lyceum years, with the corresponding overhaul of the curriculum. Lyceum graduates will receive the National Certificate before participating in the exams to enter a university or technical college.
According to Education Minister Nikos Filis, the new examination system requires a total reform of the final two years of secondary education, the Lyceum. Many private schools in Greece already follow the International Baccalaureate model. According to Filis, the two Lyceum years will prepare students better for the university entry exams.
After the four-year Gymnasium, where students will receive a broad education, in the Lyceum they will be able to decide on the direction they want to take. There, they will create their own study program. There will be no exams in the first or second year of the Lyceum. The students’ performance will be judged in the final exam and the National High School Certificate at the end of the second Lyceum year.
According to the Ministry of Education, the new system seeks to drastically reduce the costly private tuition that many students resort to for preparing for the national exams.
