The first group of Paralympic athletes who will represent Greece at the 15th Summer Paralympic Games flew to Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
The 2016 Paralympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro September 7-18.
President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos addressed the athletes in a ceremony at an Athens hotel on Tuesday evening. “The wishes of all of us accompany you in Rio de Janeiro for new great performances, like those you have achieved so far and even more,” he said.
“We have confidence in you, because we know your high morals and the transcendent power of your soul. Apart from our wishes that will accompany you, you have the general recognition of all Greek athletes, who with their brilliant performance, but mainly with the emblematic example of their lives are worthy representatives of the genuine Olympic spirit and ideal. Good luck. We are and we will always be proud of you,”the president concluded.
Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, PASOK President Fofi Gennimata, KKE Chief Dimitris Koutsoumbas and To Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis were also present along with lawmakers and mayors.
Each guest individually gave their best wishes to the President of the Greek Paralympic Committee and National Sports Federation for Persons with Disabilities, Giorgos Fountoulakis.
