UNHCR: Turkish Failed Coup Stalls EU-Turkey Pact

UNHCR European Director Vincent Cochetel, speaking with British newspaper The Guardian on Wednesday, said that the withdrawal of Turkish liaison officers from Greek islands following the failed coup on July 15 has brought the EU-Turkey refugee pact to a halt. The deportation of migrants from Greece has stopped as these cannot take place without the aid of the Turkish police.
Cochetel could not give a date as to when the cooperation will restart bearing in mind that the Greek police and EU border agency Frontex are re-establishing contact with their Turkish counterparts. As a result, the dates keep changing in regards to the deal signed in March that aims to stem the flow of refugees into Europe.
Funds benchmarked for the deal include 6 billion euros to Turkey over the next four years so as to aid the 2.7 million Syrian refugees in Turkey. In exchange, Brussels was aiming to allow visa-free EU travel for Turks.
