Violent fights between ethnic groups of minors broke out at the Moria migrant registration center on Lesvos, leaving five underage migrants injured.
About 3,500 refugees and migrants are at the 2,000-capacity registration center, including many women and children. The mix of refugees and migrants of different ethnicities in conjunction with the sub-par living conditions has created a volatile situation, an Athens News Agency report says. Crime incidents and ethnic fights have been common.
According to the report, violence erupted around midnight at the detention section of underage refugees. It is reported that children from Syria were attacked by Afghan children, who, in turn, say they are extorted by more numerous ethnic groups such as Iraqis.
During the clashes, several children were injured, with authorities transferring five of them to the hospital for treatment. The detention space for minors suffered serious damages.
Around 40 minors fled to the surrounding fields to escape the violence, while others sought shelter in Mytilene town. A police patrol was employed to find the fleeing children.
At the same time, adult ethnic groups fought between them creating a chaotic situation in the camp, the report says. Many were injured and received first aid, with two men requiring hospital treatment.
Order was restored at about 4 a.m. after a riot police operation.
