European Court Fines Greece 10 Million Euros for Poor Waste Disposal

Waste Directive
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ordered Greece to pay a 10-million-euro (US$11mln) fine for failure to comply with EU regulations on the management of hazardous waste. Apart from the fine, the cash-strapped government is being imposed another 30,000 euros per every day it fails to adopt the EU rules on rubbish disposal and complies with a 2009 ruling. In fact, Greece was in constant violation of EU waste disposal rules, failing to comply with several deadlines that required the country to improve.
The ECJ said that Greece’s failure to adopt a plan for the management of hazardous waste “could pose a danger to human health and harm the environment.” A 2010 report found that as much as 80 percent of waste ends up at Greek landfill sites. Greece is being urged to create an integrated and adequate network of disposal installations for hazardous waste.
Unfortunately, however, the Greek government is struggling to maintain public services at an EU level due to a cash-flow shortage that has prompted three international bailouts. Greece already owes its creditors more than 300 billion euros (180 percent its annual GDP).
