A mysterious blue glow that lit up the sky, followed by a loud rumble alarmed the residents near the area of Troodos in Cyprus early Friday morning.
According to a SigmaLive report, police received a number of calls from citizens who witnessed a bright blue light in the sky at around 2 am. According to their own testimonies, local residents said that they felt a vibration and saw a blue glow tear the sky, where others said they had heard a rumbling sound.
So far, there is no official explanation or physical evidence of a weather phenomenon, although initial findings indicate that a falling meteorite landed in the sea.
Astrophysicist Chrysanthos Fakas told SigmaLive that he strongly believes that it was indeed a meteorite that awakened some Cypriots who witnessed the remains of a space rock that entered the atmosphere close to the areas of Troodos.
Andreas Panayiotou, member of the Cyprus astronomer’s community told SigmaLive that it was a unique phenomenon: “First time in my life I’m experiencing such a thing.”
Meanwhile, Cyprus Civil Defense is currently searching for possible remains of the meteorite, although scientists say that the meteorite would probably have been small.
