MNI: Greek Debt Relief Talks to be Delayed Until After German Elections

German Bundestag debates 2011 budget
An MNI source with knowledge of the Greek debt situation dampened hopes of swift debt relief just a day after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ upbeat statements at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair (TIF) on Sunday. German Financial News Agency MNI reports that talks of debt restructuring would need to be postponed until after the German elections in one year’s time. The same cycles state that the EU is not willing to speak of debt relief despite the need to make the bailout more sustainable, especially bearing in mind the delays in the completion of the second review of measures and disbursement of a 2.8 billion sub-tranche.
The same sources say that the next talks with Greece will take place purely on a technical level.
European sources are reluctant to discuss Greek debt relief. MNI states that the European Central Bank (ECB) is concerned over the political interests at play that cast a shadow over the EU’s finances. Bearing this in mind, the same MNI source states that the ECB shares the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) concern over the viability of Greek debt.
