Young Migrants at Chios Camp Set Fire to Mattresses in Protest

chios migrant campAs migrant camps grow more overcrowded on the Greek island of Chios, early Monday morning some young migrants set their mattresses and other bedding on fire in a protest of the living conditions and delays in the asylum seeking process.
Police intercepted the protest before it was able to escalate further and there are no reports of injuries or arrests at this time.
Tensions have been running high in many of the migrants camps around the country in recent weeks and the Greek island of Chios is a hotspot for the migrant crisis.
The island has been hit hard by the migrant crisis as some 32,292 migrants have arrived via the Turkey-Greece sea route this year alone according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) data.
UNHCR reports that 3,316 migrants are stranded in reception camps on Chios while waiting for their asylum applications to be processed. However, the camps are meant to house 1,100 people, causing overcrowded living conditions.
Since other EU countries have placed restrictions on resettling migrants or closed their borders to migrants completely there are some 60,000 migrants stranded in Greece.
