Athens Emblematic Bookstore Closes Down

eleutheroudakis3The Eleftheroudakis bookstore on Panepistimiou Street will close down on September 30, after 21 years in the central location and 100 years in business.
The Eleftheroudakis family started in the book business in 1868 and opened its first store at Syntagma Square in 1918. The famous 24-volume Eleftheroudakis encyclopedia found its place in countless homes and schools.
The Panepistimiou Street store was the flagship of the company since 1995, with many other stores in Greece’s capital and other major cities.
However, the book business has been hit hard during the economic crisis, forcing the company to close its stores one after the other. The flagship on Panepistimiou was the last one standing.
A major book bazaar will be held at the store September 15-26.
According to a company statement, Eleftheroudakis will continue operating providing services such as “book on demand,” corporate gifts and international book orders. The statement also says that the company will be reactivated, but only when there is a steady and healthy environment for business in Greece.
