EU Commissioner Avramopoulos on Migration: A European Issue Becomes a Global Issue [video]

sbzpbkfgyd9zt1zy7k6tEuropean Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said that migration has turned from a European issue into a global issue.
Avramopoulos spoke exclusively to Greek Reporter at the opening of 71st United Nations General Assembly in New York City. He said that this has been the position of the European Union for quite a while and “now the whole world is on board.”
The Commissioner said that the UN assembly discussed the 65 million refugees around the world, not the 1.2 million refugees in Europe, and now is time for the global community to take responsibility. He said that the European Commission has established its policies on the issue and now is the time for third countries to participate, speaking of the priorities to save lives and stop smugglers.
Speaking about Greece, Avramopoulos said that there are about 60,000 migrants and refugees in Greece, stressing that its citizens and authorities have done their best to accommodate these people.
