Top Cypriot referee George Nicolaou’s car was bombed in an attack outside his home in the small village of Zygi, south of Cyprus, early on Tuesday morning. The police report indicates that the make-shift bomb exploded shortly before 3 a.m.. The region’s police rushed to the scene to investigate the explosion of the vehicle, worth around 7,000 euros, and badly damaged towards the front though damage will be covered by insurance.
The referee’s last match was Saturday’s fixture in Limassol, where AEZ Zakakiou hosted Nea Salamina, where the home team was thrashed 5-1.
The Cyprus Football Association condemned the attack as a “terrorist act” that places human lives in danger and harms the football family and the whole of society itself. The association backs the 41-year-old referee and expressed sympathy and support to his family.
The association has urged the police to find those responsible. The explosion is just the latest in a string of attacks against the property of Cypriot referees over the past two years with the most recent previous attack in March 2015 when another referee’s car was set ablaze after being doused with flammable liquid.
