Judges Annoyed on State Council's Suspension of TV License Session

Nikos Sakellariou, president of Greece’s Council of State, issued an unusual statement on Friday following a brief meeting of judges on crucial matters concerning the legislative framework for Greece’s TV licenses. The president of Greece’s highest court said that he suspended the plenum of judges due to the climate being created in recent days in public statements regarding outstanding issues concerning the licenses.
The meeting began at 10 a.m. and lasted for an hour. It was held to consider appeals that had been submitted regarding the legality of the recent tender aimed at the restriction of TV licenses to just four national broadcasters. The decision and process of the auction has been criticized for not being aligned with the constitution. Among matters that needed to be discussed at the meeting of judges was whether a National Radio and Television Council should be created to monitor the content and action of the TV stations instead of the Minister of State.
The judicial meeting was suspended following a disagreement between judges. The reasons behind the disagreement were not immediately clear.
Sakellariou said that the next session would be announced 24 hours ahead of time though it is unclear when it will be held. This unusual suspension has sent speculation flying with judicial sources stating that the judges have the sense and calm required by their role to not be influenced in their duties regarding whatsoever climate that may be created to sway them. Sources state that judges were annoyed by Sakellariou’s statement that points out the critical nature of the meeting, something that judges say is a given.
