A migrant was stabbed on Thursday night at the Fessa camp in Oraiokastro, after a violent fight between migrants — another one in the overcrowded hospitality facilities across Greece.
Migrants of different nationalities clashed and the fights resulted in several injuries and one stabbing. The victim was transferred to a Thessaloniki hospital.
Violent fights among migrants and riots are all too frequent as camps get overcrowded and tension rises as migrants realize that, for most of them, it is unlikely they will move to the country of their choice.
East Aegean islands bear the brunt of the refugee crisis, with a total of 14,000 migrants stranded on Lesvos, Chios, Leros, Kos and Samos. However, the hospitality facilities can only accommodate about half of them.
Lesvos and Chios are hit the most, because of their proximity to the Turkish shores. Stranded refugees overflowing the camps have become a menace to residents who complain of burglaries, animal theft and vandalism. Protest rallies are frequent, often resulting in clashes with riot police.
Lesvos Mayor Spyros Galinos and other officials are to meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and lawmakers at Maximos Mansion on Monday to discuss the refugee issue.
North Aegean Governor Christiana Kalogerou, Moria community commissioner Nikos Trakellis, General Secretary for Aegean and Island Policy Yiannis Yiannelis, Lesvos Prefecture MPs Charalambos Athanasiou, Giorgos Pallis and Stavros Tassos. They will be joined by police officials and other law enforcement authorities.
The Lesvos mayor told Athens News Agency that “this one will not be just another meeting. From this meeting I expect from the government and opposition proposals and decisions for the evacuation of 5,500 people.”
