Prosecutor Moves Against 4 in Phone Tapping and Pythia Assassination Plot Against Karamanlis

Greek Prosecutor Maria-Sophia Vaitsi called for the indictment of United States former agent William Bazil who is implicated in the phone tapping scandal of 2004 and the Pythia Plan, an assassination plot against former conservative prime minister Kostas Karamanlis. There is already an arrest warrant in Bazil’s name, as he stands accused of spying charges.
The prosecutor has called for the indictment of four people for their involvement in the tapping following the judicial inquiry into the matter, that also included the Pythia plan.
The proposal was raised following findings by Anti-Corruption Investigator Dimitris Foukas who had led the probe into the phone tapping scandal and the assassination attempt plan that never went through. Foukas’ investigations show that from August 2004 through to March 2004, American agent Bazil had tried to extract top secret information concerning the interests of Greece’s democracy through a wire tapping system. His wife had bought shadow card phones using the pseudonym Petros Markos from Akti Miaouli. These were used in the surveillance of dozens of politicians, members of the government at the time, as well as dozens of other persons.
The prosecutor has asked for Bazil and his wife to be made exempt from the phone tapping charges of 2004, however, the final say rests with the Court of Misdemeanors.
